Ubay is a 1st class municipality located in the northeastern part of the Province of Bohol, Philippines. It serves as the commercial, agricultural, and administrative center of northeastern Bohol, providing essential services to surrounding municipalities.

Bounded by the Camotes Sea to the north and east, Ubay boasts a diverse landscape of coastal areas, rolling hills, and fertile agricultural lands. The municipality covers a total land area of approximately 235.7 square kilometers and is composed of 44 barangays.

History of Ubay

From a Spanish-era settlement to a modern municipality — the story of Ubay reflects the resilience and spirit of its people.

1850s

Early Settlement

Ubay was established as a municipality during the Spanish colonial period, with early settlers drawn to its fertile lands and coastal resources along the Camotes Sea.

1901

American Period

Under American administration, Ubay was formally organized as a municipality of Bohol. Public schools, roads, and civic institutions were established to serve the growing population.

1942–1945

World War II

Ubay played a significant role during the liberation of Bohol. The municipality endured hardships but its people demonstrated resilience and patriotism throughout the occupation.

1960s–1980s

Post-War Growth

Ubay expanded rapidly as agriculture, fishing, and trade flourished. The municipality became a key commercial hub in northeastern Bohol, serving surrounding towns.

2013

Typhoon Yolanda Recovery

Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) caused significant damage to Ubay. The community rallied together, and with government support, rebuilt stronger infrastructure and disaster-resilient communities.

  • Investment and business opportunities to increase jobs and reduce poverty;
  • Expand housing options either in urban or rural barangays to meet the needs of the growing populace at various life stages;
  • Encourage the public, youth, senior citizens, and persons with disability as active partners in drawing-up community development particularly on spatial land uses;
  • Promote strong and dynamic economic infrastructures through agricultural productivity and application of Science and Technology;
  • Strengthen Ubay's community identity and sense of maintaining "green areas green"
  • Inculcate in the municipal planning team climate change and disaster risk reduction management for stable environment putting into effect the Ridge-to-Reef model;
  • Improve the development and management of ecotourism destination;
  • Deepen Solid Waste Management Planning for lawful implementation;
  • Develop cluster growth area among adjoining barangays to leverage effective and efficient agricultural and fishery productivity to improve the income of farmers and fisherfolk that will augment their buying power and local revenue.
